When my best friend got married last month (and took our barkada on an epic group honeymoon to Boracay), I decided to give her and her new husband a wedding scrapbook. The idea came to me as we were heading to the plane that would take us to the island, and looking back on it now, I wonder why I didn’t think of it sooner.
I had, thankfully, already done some things that would help me in my creation of the album. I created a shared Facebook album in the days leading up to the wedding, and I made everyone who went to Boracay a contributor. This meant everyone could upload photos into a single folder/album. This turned out great for me, because I only had to look in a single place as I selected photos for the scrapbook. Thank you to everyone for following instructions and uploading photos by the deadline, haha.
I actually worked on it as I was out of town on another trip the following weekend. It’s a good thing I have a Canon Selphy – I was able to take the printer with me and print on the go. I used the Week in the Life album that I got from Ali Edwards several months ago.
Honestly, the hardest part was choosing which of the hundreds of photos would make it into the album. Part of my struggle was the mix of page protector configurations. Since my normal Project Life album is 12×12, I wasn’t used to the smaller size and spent quite a bit of time mapping out what picture would go where. I knew that I wanted to go chronologically, at least, so I let the pictures ‘dictate’ which page protectors I would use. The more pictures I wanted to use, the smaller the pockets had to be.
I gave it to them a few days before they left to go back home to the US. I was expecting Rica to love it (I knew she would appreciate a tangible souvenir from what has to be the happiest day/s of her life.) but what I wasn’t expecting was how much Jon would like it, too. I caught him showing it to his friends, reminiscing about some of the things captured in the photos. I have honestly never seen him smile so big, not even on his wedding day.
Rica says: When you get married, you get the opportunity to recognize and really appreciate all your blessings. People are all about showing you love and support, and of course, helping you get your new life started. We received tons of gifts.. and we appreciate the generosity of our friends and family more than we can express. But this present from my best friend was easily the most meaningful, and definitely one of our faves. We look at it all the time and have it on our coffee table ready for visitors to flip through.
In a way, I’m kind of grateful I wasn’t able to journal much about the highlights of our trip. I didn’t want it to be “Pinky’s Perspective on the Boracay Trip.” The fact that it’s on display at their home, and that they are able to tell their visitors stories about the wedding and honeymoon based on this scrapbook… that means the world to me. Stories matter, you guys.
To Jon and Rica: thanks for letting me experience this epic adventure with you! I love and miss you. <3
